For structural quality timber, add 25% to the above prices.  Structural quality timber has less character, but each piece will be guaranteed to have good loadbearing strength (large knots for example weaken a piece of timber).

Price per foot for ‘clear’ sawn green oak, (no knots or sapwood).  Equally beautiful locally grown timber, but with little character as it is free of knots or uneven grain.  This may be important if you wish to bend the timber for example.  Available in lengths of 3 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet, 9 feet, 12 feet and longer if required.

Q: What is green oak?

A: Green oak is simply oak that is in a totally unseasoned state.  This means it will have a very high moisture content – at least 60%.  This makes it ideal for bending and much easier to work.  It will still take a beautiful finish, and over time will dry out (season).  If it is allowed to dry rapidly splits and cracks may appear, and these will add to the character of the wood.  Have you ever wondered why old beams in pre-Victorian buildings are so full of character?  It is largely because they were made from green oak and have thoroughly dried out over the years.

Oak trusses many hundreds of years old in an office..

Green oak can be tamed however.  Boatbuilders for example use green oak for bending; and because it is used in small cross sections, not allowed to dry too quickly, and thoroughly fixed in place; it doesn’t crack or distort.  Also the way timber is cut makes a huge difference to how it dries.  Quarter sawn timber will distort and crack far less.  BTS can supply quarter sawn timber – sometimes at no extra charge – just ask.
